Western Region InterClub ChallengeRound One ReportBlayney hosted Dubbo and Katoomba hosted Bathurst in the first round of the Western Region InterClub Challenge last Sunday.
Foreground - Mick Hendricks (left) and Sandy Aich. Background - Ramon Aich (left) and Col ParsonsDubbo were a man short due to several of their players being unavailable on the day, Blayney fielded a team minus some of their best due to them having other commitments making for an interesting clash. Mick Hendricks got Blayney off to a good start, giving a sparkling display of attacking chess to overcome Sandy Aich on Board Two. This combined with the point gained from the forfeited Board Four game, put Blayney up 2 – 0. Dubbo’s Ramon Aich turned in one of his better games to get the better of Col Parsons on Board Three. Col probably summed this game up best when he said, “No excuses, he just outplayed me.” On Board One Phil Bourke faced Trevor Bemrose and despite being out rated by 300 pts, Phil managed to get himself into a position where a draw was the likely result and then misplayed the resulting endgame to lose the game. This was doubly unfortunate, as a draw would have given Blayney a win in the match, but left the scores tied at 2 pts each, and on tiebreak, Dubbo were the winners. In the other Match, Bathurst recorded a 2.5 – 1.5 win over Katoomba. Slavko Kojic recorded the biggest upset of the day, registering a draw with Dick Davies on Board One. John McLoon defeated Glynn Curran on Board Two and Rod McPhee gained the win over Tyler Milson on Board Three. George Marfutenko restored some pride for Katoomba, winning his game against Chris Dowling on Board Four. Bathurst were very appreciative of the fine hospitality that Katoomba displayed, but didn't allow this gratitude to prevent them from gaining an important first round win! All the Clubs now look forward to the next round on the 25th May in Bathurst when Bathurst will face Blayney and Katoomba face Dubbo in what should be very interesting matches.
