Under strength but fully Manned!Preview of Blayney vs Bathurst Team MatchAppeared in the Blayney Chronicle 28th June 2007 May be one way of viewing the Blayney Chess Club’s line-up for next Wednesday night’s clash against Bathurst with our Nr 1 player taking a break, and the return of an ‘old’ regular. Alternatively, one may view the addition of several new faces as strengthening our middle boards and having an overall positive effect on our playing strength as a whole. The latter is probably the most accurate. This is arguably the strongest overall line-up Blayney has fielded in these inter town clashes to date. It is definitely the largest, as a team of nine players will be squaring off in one of the biggest inter town clashes since the halcyon days of Bathurst vs Katoomba in the 80’s when ten players per side were the regular go. With our Nr 1 player Fritz Van der Wal enjoying a well-earned break somewhere up North, we are very fortunate to be able to add to the team the services of Matthew Mann, John Cooper, and Mick Hendricks. Matthew is home from University for the holidays and will undoubtedly enjoy the opportunity of renewing old friendships and joining his Dad, Glenn, and brother, Garry, in their first outing in the one team, hence the fully Manned reference earlier. John Cooper and Mick Hendricks are from outside of Blayney and are very happy to avail themselves of the playing opportunities that Blayney Chess Club is providing. John from Cowra, and Mick from Woodstock will undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised at the calibre of games played in these Bathurst - Blayney matches. The Blayney line up in likely playing order is Phil Bourke, Garry Mann, Col Parsons, John Cooper, Matthew Mann, Mick Hendricks, Brian Patten, Glenn Mann, and David Rogerson. On the local scene, we will be having a break this week as the playing venue will be utilised by another group in a large presentation and though we are usually able to share side by side without any problems, their event this week justifies them having the floor to themselves. Interest in the upcoming Blayney Open in September continues to grow with the likelihood of several players rated +2000 making the event a challenging task for all of the local players. Even at this early stage, there are 20 confirmed entries, and optimism for a very successful event is growing steadily. Blayney High School ventures to Kelso High for their clash in the Western Division of the High Schools competition this Thursday. We wish them well and look forward to some positive news after. Dubbo Chess Club is conducting a Winter Junior Tournament in a few weeks time and several Blayney juniors will be making the trip for that event. Other Blayney juniors that feel they are up to that challenge are welcome to contact us at the Club or give Glenn Mann a ring on 6368 3823. Blayney Chess Club has also launched itself upon the internet, please visit us at www.blayneychess.com, of course we would be happy if you were able to pay us a visit in person at a regular Club night, Thursdays at the Bowling Club from 6 pm.
