Blayney prepares for sixth inter club match with Bathurst

Blayney Chess Club has been enjoying recent good turnouts with 10-11 players being the usual. As a few of the more regular players have had to devote themselves to their academic studies in recent weeks, resulting in their absence from the club. It is pleasing to note that it is the large number of newcomers frequenting the club for games and chat that has been responsible for the upsurge of interest shown in the classic game.

This week Blayney Chess Club host Bathurst Chess Club in the sixth inter club match between these friendly adversaries. With the score standing at 3-2 in favour of Blayney, the Bathurst players will be intent on restoring the balance with a victory. Thursday nights match will feature nine boards, and again, some of the best chess brains in the central west will be engaged in determined battle. People may think chess is only a game, but like any game that has a winner and a loser and human nature being what it is, most people prefer to be the winner in the contest. Thankfully in chess, you can learn from defeat, and come back next time better prepared for the contest.

Play will begin at 7pm, and anyone interested in observing is most welcome to come along to the downstairs auditorium of the Blayney Bowling Club. We encourage you to grab a refreshing drink from upstairs, and anyone not playing will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The Blayney line-up will be Fritz Van der Wal, Phil Bourke, Garry Mann, Mick Hendricks, John Cooper, David Rogerson, Brian Patten, Glen Mann, and Brian Pethwick.

The upcoming Blayney Open Chess Tournament, to be held on September 8th and 9th, is continuing to shape up as being a successful event, with 26 players already committed to playing in the event, the likelihood of 40 plus players is becoming a real possibility. Only similar events held in Sydney and Canberra gain similar interest, so this type of turnout will be a tremendous fillip for the local chess community and augers well for the staging of more chess events in the future. This event is an ideal opportunity for all chess players to experience tournament chess, it will not be near as daunting as you imagine. There will many players out to simply enjoy a weekend of chess and possibly win a game or two.
