 Can you beat a Grandmaster?

Would you like to try?

Blayney Chess Club is pleased to present chess enthusiasts with the following opportunity to do just that. To make the odds even more favourable to you, there will be chess instruction from the Grandmaster beforehand and he will be playing 25 people at the same time.

Grandmaster Dejan Antic will conduct a lecture and simultaneous exhibition at Blayney Bowling Club on 18th November 2007 commencing at 12:00 pm.

Dejan Antic (pictured playing in the 2007 SIO) is the winner of many international and local chess tournaments in his playing career. His latest success being equal first in the Sydney International Open of 2007, the strongest chess tournament ever played in Australia. He is also an internationally recognised coach, with impressive credentials in that arena. Dejan Antic hails from Serbia and Montenegro and is now based in Sydney. In fact, he is based in Parramatta. Perhaps, the “home ground” advantage did help him to a certain extent to jointly win the SIO! Dejan Antic is one of only three Grandmasters that call Australia home and is arguably the best chess player currently playing here.

The lecture will cover topics ranging from endgame strategy to openings and their strategic ideas. All demonstrated through instructive games and examples. After the lecture, Grandmaster Antic will field questions from the audience. Each participant at the lecture will receive a printed handout covering the material presented in the lecture plus a collection of Dejan Antic’s favourite problem positions.

Following this, Dejan Antic will play 25 opponents simultaneously. This is both an impressive display of a Grandmaster’s chess skill, and a unique opportunity for mere chess mortals to play a Grandmaster with increased chances of winning. Though it rarely happens, it is definitely fun trying, and anyone lucky enough to pull off that rare defeat of the Grandmaster will enjoy the rapture it brings.

To participate in this unique opportunity will cost $35.00 for both the lecture and simultaneous. If you wish to attend the lecture and watch the simul, that will cost $20.00. Alternatively, you may elect to only play in the simul at $30.00. Spectators are welcome to attend the simultaneous exhibition, but the lecture session will be limited to only those that have registered and paid to participate in it. Anyone interested in attending this afternoon of chess education and pleasure should contact Phil Bourke on either 6368 3407 or 0439 598 203 or Brian Patten on 6368 2694 for further details and to register. You can also use email blayneychess@bigpond.com

With the Simultaneous being limited to 25 players and the Chess Club adopting a first come, first served policy and four eight spots having already been taken, any hesitation could see you missing out on this opportunity to learn from and test yourself against one of the best chess players in Australia.
