Chess now available at the Library

Blayney Chess Club in conjunction with Blayney Library is now offering chess at the Library. Sessions are from 3pm to 5pm on Tuesday afternoons. All are welcome and the cost is free.

Bathurst to visit on 21st February

Blayney will host Bathurst for an 8 board match on 21st February. This will be a great opportunity for all players to enjoy a good game of chess with our traditional opponents in the friendly atmosphere of the Blayney Bowling Club. Play commences at 7pm and will feature some of the best players in the bush in action. Anyone that would like to come along and enjoy the night is more than welcome.

Toukley Open

Garry Mann and Phil Bourke competed in the recent Toukley Open. Garry finished equal third in Division One with 4 points gathered from 3 wins and 2 draws from his seven games, whilst Phil was just behind the placegetters with 3.5 points from 3 wins and 1 draw from his seven games. Bathurst's Jamie Davidson also competed, finishing on 3 points. Garry's weekend featured some lucky wins and some damn good ones. Phil may have changed a few of his results with more precise play, but in the final wash, both players probably finished close to where they did even if we played the if and but scenarios right out. Toukley are to be commended on a fine tournament where everything ran smoothly and everyone enjoyed the chess and social atmosphere.

Blayney Open to include NSW Country Champion

Blayney has been accepted as this years host for the title of NSW Country Champion. This is welcome news as Fritz Van der Wal, one of our adopted players from Orange, has been Country Champion on three previous occasions, 1987, 2004 and joint champion in 2005, and will enjoy the opportunity of chasing another title on his home ground. Though he will face a strong challenge from other local players, most notably Bathurst's Slavko Kojic and Dubbo's Trevor Bemrose will also be intent on grabbing this title for themselves. Plus a host of other locals that could all surprise on the day make this an interesting competition and even with the event seven months away, anticipation can only grow. The addition of a $150 prize for the winner of this title will also surely see some other good country players step forward to contest this title with even another previous multiple winner, Alan Tankel, likely to make the trip.
