Chess getting more hecticAction is coming thick and fast for Blayney Chess Club members. With Fritz Van der Wal, Phil Bourke, and former regular Garry Mann competing in the Doeberl Cup, with Fritz and Phil going on to play in the Sydney International Open to complete the chess odyssey of 16 games in 9 days in 2 cities. Garry was unable to play the SIO due to University commitments which was a disappointment after his great result in Canberra, but sometimes life gets in the way of chess. Garry had 5 wins and 2 losses in the Minor Division to finish in equal fourth place, perhaps next year he will clinch a podium finish in this division, if his rating doesn’t climb above the 1600 limit in the meantime. Fritz enjoyed some torrid matches against much higher rated players, gaining 2 wins and one draw from his seven games in Canberra, but suffered some chess lag or something in Sydney, only getting one draw from nine games. But it must be remembered; that Fritz was competing against fields that included 10 Grandmasters, 9 International Masters and a host of other titled players, so considering the quality of the opposition he faced he must now be in razor sharp form for the upcoming Dubbo Open on April 12 and 13. Phil had a mixed bag, a reasonable result at Doeberl, four wins and three losses for an equal 17th finish in the Minor Division, followed by a good result, four wins, two draws, and three losses against a stronger field at Sydney still has him fuming over some mediocre play in some of his games Doeberl. In other news, the Blayney High School Chess team venture to Cowra on the 10th April for a friendly match to give their largely junior team a taste of competitive play and attempt to sort out some of the players for their upcoming clashes in the NSW Schools Competition. There has been a pleasing turnout of 15-20 players each week, and with the majority of them being Year 7 and 8 students, a bright future is anticipated in the coming years for the chess team. One interesting by-product of the Sydney International Open was the visit to town by William Anderson-Smith on his return trip to Adelaide. As a member of the organising committee who runs the 2nd largest Weekender in Australia, his thoughts on how to improve the annual Blayney Open were greatly appreciated. Plus the pat on the back he gave the Bowling Club as being an ideal venue for a chess tournament, can only auger well for the growth of that event. Please come along to the Bowling Club on Thursday evenings or the Blayney Library on Tuesday afternoons to find out how much you could enjoy this great game that is called the Royal Game.
