Chess players look forward to some great fun

2008 Blayney Chess Open

It was so much fun the first time, we are doing it again! A phrase that could apply to so many things! In this case, we are talking about that noblest of games, chess. Now that you are focused, we’ll move on.

Blayney Chess Club conducted their first Open Tournament last year. This was well received with many local businesses lending support and 34 players taking part. So with a successful launch, we shift to the running of the 2nd Blayney Chess Open on 6 & 7 September 2008 at the Blayney Bowling Club.

This year’s event is honoured to have been selected as host of the title of NSW Country Champion. This is a prestigious title dating back to 1956 and with our local champion having been a three time winner in 1987, 2004 and co-champion in 2005, we are hoping that this years winner will be a member of our own clan of Blayney Barbarians. Though there will be a host of players planning on taking the spoils of this title back to their own lair.

This year’s Open winner will be looking at an increased reward of four hundred dollars, so maybe even last year’s winner, Lee Jones, will be back to defend his title.

Looking forward to seeing many of the faces of last year, plus many new ones at this year’s event, as it will be conducted in the same friendly vein with a little bit of a competitive twist thrown in for fun.

Central Western InterClub Challenge

All the Clubs will be gathering in Blayney on the 24th of this month for the penultimate round of this event. At this stage Bathurst has laid a firm claim for the title, but Dubbo are poised to issue a challenge with Katoomba and Blayney both hoping to prove to be thorns for both teams.

Country Secondary Schools Chess Competition

This Friday, the Blayney High School team face up to St Stanislaus College from Bathurst in the fourth round of this years competition.

The team is well prepared for the challenge and we are hoping they continue on their great expedition in this tournament.
